2007-2008 SEASON
My Fair Lady
May 2-May 18
Referred to as "the perfect musical," My Fair Lady has been produced five times on Broadway and three times in London, since 1956, not to mention the extremely popular film version. So timeless and popular, a critically acclaimed, award-winning revival is currently on tour, playing in Los Angeles. Palm Canyon Theatre's production runs from May 2 through May 18.
My Fair Lady is unique among "traditional" musicals of the fifties and sixties in that there is no main love-story or significant love sub-plot. The story centers on phonetics professor Henry Higgins and his brash claim "that he can train any woman to speak so properly that he could pass her off as a duchess." Accepting a challenge by his peer, he discovers tattered Eliza Doolittle, selling flowers on the streets of Covent Garden, a perfect specimen to prove his prowess. Eliza endures an endless succession of tutoring including testing of her socialization skills. Eventually, Eliza's well-honed speech and new-found polished presentation even fools Higgins' Hungarian rival when she is presented at the Embassy Ball as being Hungarian-born. Overhearing Higgins' ungrateful boasting about the success of his accomplishment, Eliza realizes she is nothing more than a pawn for Higgin's ego and walks out on Higgins, leaving him bewildered by her ingratitude. He soon realizes that he does have feelings for Eliza. She tentatively returns in the final scene and we are left with hope for reconciliation between pupil and teacher.
Palm Canyon Theatre's production of this classic is directed by Dr. William Layne with musical direction by David McLaughlin, choreography by Se Layne, scenic and lighting design by J. W. Layne and costume design by Derik Shopinski. Joining Don Hillier as Colonel Pickering and David Boyd as Freddy Eynsford-Hill, are Equity members Garnet Smith as Alfred P. Doolittle, Rob Wydert as Professor Henry Higgins, and Se Layne as Eliza Doolittle.

The year is 1936. As the play opens, THE LECTURER, a severe authority figure, informs the audience of the new drug menace "Marihuana," which threatens the American way of life! His warnings are reinforced by THE PLACARD GIRL who throughout the play holds up large signs that clearly state the moral of what we've just seen. From his podium, The Lecturer warns us that action must be taken immediately, before the Good Ol' U.S.A. succumbs to the Demon Weed! (REEFER MADNESS!) The Lecturer illustrates his point, introducing us to JIMMY HARPER and MARY LANE, a lovable pair of wholesome teens who hold hands, sip hot cocoa and think pure thoughts while studying Shakespeare for English class. (ROMEO AND JULIET)
